NINE

Breaking Glass

By the time I got back to the house, it was a little after five. Perfect, because Calvin would be home soon, and I could talk to him about my frustrating and disappointing day and get the encouragement I desperately needed.

As often happened when I was feeling cranky and stymied, I went into the kitchen and rooted around in the fridge and the cupboard, hoping that figuring out dinner might make me feel a little better about life. That was why, when Calvin got home about fifteen minutes later, I was just finishing frying bacon for a batch of homemade carbonara sauce.

He bent down and kissed me as Sadie danced around his feet, waiting for her turn to get some love. His expression was surprised. “You’re making dinner after all? I thought we were going out tonight.”

Oops. I’d been so focused on trying to figure out who had really killed Trent Reynolds, it had completely slipped my mind that Calvin had offered to take me to the restaurant at the casino. I gave him an apologetic smile and said, “I was hoping making dinner might help to settle my nerves.”

His head tilted a little as he studied my face. “I guess your day didn’t go the way you wanted it to.”

“That’s putting it mildly.” I laid the last two pieces of bacon on a plate covered in a paper towel so they would drain, then turned back toward my husband. “I have a long list of suspects and no leads. Or rather, I thought I had suspects, but they either have watertight alibis, or my auras are telling me they can’t be the killer.”

“It’s good that your auras are helping, though, right?” my husband ventured.

“Maybe,” I said, knowing my tone sounded a little sulky. “But I’d rather they were showing me murderous auras so I’d know who the killer is.”

Calvin actually chuckled at that comment. “Well, I suppose that would make the situation a little simpler. Still, it’s not a bad thing to be crossing people off your list. At least that way, you won’t waste time and energy going after prospects that don’t pan out.”

I supposed he had a point. Figuring I’d spent enough time complaining, I said, “Were you able to find a forensic locksmith?”

He nodded. “Yes, but he can’t be at the site until noon tomorrow. That’s why it’s probably a good idea to keep investigating all other avenues until we can learn for sure whether or not the lock at the gym was picked.”

“It might not have been,” I said, and told him how Josie and I had discovered that Courtney Hill hadn’t been watching the door the entire time at the reception, giving someone an easy opening to go in and steal the keys from Josie’s purse. “And then whoever took the keys could just go to the kiosk at Walmart and get a duplicate and that would be the end of it,” I finished.

At once, Calvin shook his head. “It’s actually not that easy,” he said.
